Megaherz live at the "Metropolis"

April 9, 2002 - Munich

TicketI had arrived in Munich the day before with Betsy, and had stayed the previous night with John Funk. Still not quite used to the new time zone, I was very tired, but that didn't last long once the excitement set in from being able to finally see Megaherz live. We (John, Betsy, Fraggle, and I) showed up a few hours early to meet with the band and beat the crowd. On our way in, we asked the guy selling tickets how many were left. "Only about twenty," he said. Later we learned that it sold out :-).

The opening band, Zombiejoe, really impressed me. I wasn't expecting much and I hadn't heard anything from them before, but I bought their CD from the merchandise stand as soon as their set was over. I don't really know what to compare them to, but their stage presence was amazing. They sound much more like American rock than anything, yet with a definitely unique sound. Cornelius Ochs, the singer, jumped around and got up close to the crowd, as well as played a distorted tuba at the end of their set. I highly recommend checking them out.

SetlistAfter they finished, I headed over to the side where the lights were being controlled and got out my video camera to tape a bit. "Licht II" was played as an intro and the band came out one-by-one. Right when it was finishing, the band blasted in and started "Heute schon gelebt?" and Megaherz began their amazing show. After "Gott sein", I put the video camera away and headed out with my regular camera to enjoy the rest of the show from the front row. It stunned me how easy it was to get to the front without pushing anyone or being pushed.

From the center of the front row I watched the band put their heart into each song. I have never seen another band get into its music and connect with the audience as much. Most songs sounded even better live than recorded on the CDs. There were added guitar parts, different singing, etc. Alexx spent a little (or a lot of) time between each song talking to the crowd about whatever. "Who saw our last video on MTV?", he pauses and waits for a few screams, "Nobody, right? We don't have one."

After they finished with "F.F.F.", I ran to grab more film. They came right back out for an encore. Right before the last song, they called me up and introduced me as their US-webmaster. They tried to get Betsy to come up as well . . . but she would have none of that :-). Then they had more fans come up onto the stage and they began "Blender" while we rocked out and each sang a few lines.

The show was just amazing. I can't really describe in words how great the atmosphere, sound, presentation and everything else were. You'll just have to see them for yourself . . .

A while after the show, when most fans had finally left, we all headed over to club Doom for the after-show party (anyone could go). At one point Alexx took a chainsaw that seemed to have had its chain removed and proceeded to "kill the DJ" while "Tötet den DJ" played over the speakers. We just hung out and listened to music and talked before finally heading home and crashing from exhaustion . . . and getting up to do it all over again the next day!
